It is becoming popular in the country and abroad due to its valid fundamental doctrine and holistic approach. Ayurveda believes in complete health which covers all the aspects of health like physical, mental, spiritual, and social. Mental health is based upon the concept of \u2018<em>Manas<\/em>\u2019 (mind\/psyche). Therefore a thorough understanding related to the concept of <em>Manas<\/em> is needed. These understandings can be utilized in the promotion of health and cure of disease.<br \/>\n<em>Manas<\/em> word is derived from <strong>\u201c\u092e\u0928\u094d\u092f\u0924\u0947 \u091c\u094d\u091e\u093e\u092f\u0924\u0947 \u0905\u0928\u0947\u0928 \u0907\u0924\u093f \u092e\u0928\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong>Manas is the entity that causes the thought process. Any kind of thinking takes place because of the presence of <em>manas<\/em>. In a wide sense, it reflects intellect, perception, sense, and will.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Synonyms of <em>Manas<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><em>Atindriya <\/em>(Beyond sensory perception or other than <em>indriya<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><em>Chetas<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Sattva<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Attributes of <em>Manas<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Ektvam <\/em>(oneness), <em>Anutvam<\/em> (atomicity) are the attributes of <em>Manas<\/em>. As quoted by <em>Acharya Charak<\/em>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0905\u0923\u0941\u0924\u094d\u0935\u092e\u0925\u091a\u0948\u0915\u0924\u094d\u0935\u0902 \u0926\u094d\u0935\u094c \u0917\u0941\u0923\u094c \u092e\u0928\u0938\u0903 \u0938\u094d\u092e\u0943\u0924\u094c ||\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0-Ch.sha.- 1\/19<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to <em>Acharya Sushruta<\/em>, <em>Manas<\/em> possess the quality of both the sensory as well as motor organs. As quoted-<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0909\u092d\u092f\u093e\u0924\u094d\u092e\u0915\u0902 \u092e\u0928\u0903|\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 -Su. Sha.-1\/4<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Location or abode of <em>Manas<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is located in \u00a0<em>Hridaya<\/em> (heart) as per <em>Acharya\u00a0 Charak<\/em>\u00a0 While according to <em>Acharya Bhel<\/em>a, it is situated between <em>shir<\/em> and <em>talu<\/em> (between skull\u00a0 and palate). Viman.-5\/7<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Characteristics of <em>Manas<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The sense faculties are capable of perceiving the object when they are motivated by <em>Manas<\/em>. For instance, sometimes a person understands something and sometimes understanding does not take place. It suggests that perception of knowledge is facilitated by the presence of <em>Manas<\/em> while the absence of knowledge reflects a lack of association between <em>Manas<\/em> and sensory organs. Therefore, <em>Manas<\/em> is the entity that is solely responsible for the perception and absence of knowledge. As quoted-<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0916\u093e\u0926\u0940\u0928\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0924\u094d\u092e\u093e\u092e\u0928\u0903\u0915\u093e\u0932\u094b \u0926\u093f\u0936\u0936\u094d\u091a \u0926\u094d\u0930\u0935\u094d\u092f\u0938\u0919\u094d\u0917\u094d\u0930\u0939\u0903|<\/strong>-Ch. Su.-1\/48<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is also considered as one of the <em>Adhyatma<\/em>&#8211;<em>Dravya<\/em> causing indulgence or non-indulgence in virtuous or sinful acts as per <em>Acharya Charak<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Association of <em>Manas<\/em> with <em>Rajas<\/em> and <em>Tamas<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mind is always associated with\u00a0<em>Rajas<\/em> and <em>Tamas<\/em>, but all defects are caused by ignorance (<em>tamas<\/em><em>)<\/em> or lack of knowledge. The association of impure <em>Manas <\/em>(i.e <em>sadosha-manas<\/em>) makes the soul enter into worldly bondage. The cause of movement and inclination of the soul from one body to another is defective mind and potent past deeds. Sha.- 2\/38<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The other texts also suggest that \u201c\u092e\u0928 \u090f\u0935 \u092e\u0928\u0941\u0937\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0923\u093e\u0902 \u0915\u093e\u0930\u0923\u0902 \u092c\u0928\u094d\u0927\u092e\u094b\u0915\u094d\u0937\u092f\u094b\u201d means <em>Manas<\/em> is responsible for bondage or salvation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Sattva<\/em> or <em>Manas<\/em> is one of the four components of <em>Ayu<\/em>. According to Ayurveda life is the combination of four factors namely <em>Sharir<\/em> (body), <em>Indriya<\/em> (sensory organs), <em>Manas<\/em>( psyche), and <em>Atma<\/em>(soul). Su.- 1\/55<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two types of <em>mano-dosha<\/em> namely <em>rajas<\/em> and <em>tamas<\/em> are mentioned in Ayurveda classics.
