In Charak Samhita, the term <em>Sharir Vichay<\/em> has been mentioned. <em>Sharir Vichay<\/em> is the branch of science that has been explained for the purpose of the wellbeing of the human being. One will be able to understand the factors that are helpful for the maintenance of health only by understanding the term <em>Sharir<\/em>. <em>Sharir vichay<\/em> means analytical knowledge of the human body. Therefore this branch of science which is called <em>Sharir Vichay<\/em> has been well acclaimed by the experts. Therefore it occupies an important place as long as the understanding of interventions and the lifestyles measures that are intended at the maintenance of health are concerned.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Concept of homeostasis<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Homeostasis is the state of equilibrium or normalcy when all the mechanisms are operating at their optimal level. Currently, the term homeostasis is being often replaced by the term \u2018Homeodynamics\u2019, as the equilibrium in human beings is not maintained at a static phase rather it is maintained at a dynamic state, which in turn is maintained by multiple dynamic factors. Homeostasis means the state of equilibrium \/normalcy when all the mechanisms operate at their optimal level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0935\u093f\u0915\u093e\u0930\u094b \u0927\u093e\u0924\u0941\u0935\u0948\u0937\u092e\u094d\u092f\u0902, \u0938\u093e\u092e\u094d\u092f\u0902 \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0915\u0943\u0924\u093f\u0930\u0941\u091a\u094d\u092f\u0924\u0947|(Ch. Su.9\/3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Charaka quotes that the equilibrium in the status of <em>Dhatu <\/em>is called <em>Prakriti<\/em> (normalcy) while the disequilibrium state is called <em>Vikara<\/em>. (ch. Su.9\/3). Here the term <em>Dhatu<\/em> is used to indicate all factors that are involved in the maintenance of human health. <em>Dhatu<\/em> means \u2018\u0927\u093e\u0930\u0923\u093e\u0924 \u0927\u093e\u0924\u0935\u0903\u2019 the one helps in the sustenance of the human body at its optimal status. <em>Dhatus<\/em> are often translated as tissues, but all the <em>Dhatu<\/em> don\u2019t meet the definition required for the term \u2018Tissue\u2019 as per the modern biomedicine perspective.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u092a\u094d\u0930\u0915\u0943\u0924\u093f\u092d\u0942\u0924\u093e\u0928\u093e\u0902 \u0924\u0941 \u0916\u0932\u0941 \u0935\u093e\u0924\u093e\u0926\u0940\u0928\u093e\u0902 \u092b\u0932\u092e\u093e\u0930\u094b\u0917\u094d\u092f\u092e\u094d|(Ch.Sha. 6\/18).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Acharya Charak quotes that when <em>Vatadi Doshas <\/em>are in the state of normalcy results in the state of health or well-being. The terms like <em>Dosha, Dhatus<\/em> are sometimes interchangeably used in <em>Samhitas<\/em> at various places. Here the <em>Doshas<\/em> can be considered as <em>Dhatus <\/em>when they are in the equilibrium state.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0927\u093e\u0924\u0941\u0938\u093e\u092e\u094d\u092f\u0915\u094d\u0930\u093f\u092f\u093e \u091a\u094b\u0915\u094d\u0924\u093e \u0924\u0928\u094d\u0924\u094d\u0930\u0938\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0938\u094d\u092f \u092a\u094d\u0930\u092f\u094b\u091c\u0928\u092e\u094d||(Ch. Su.1\/53).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0According to Charak, all the efforts that are aimed at establishing the <em>Dhatusamyata<\/em> i.e equilibrium is the major objective of the entire science of Ayurveda. All of the above references are pointing towards the concept of homeostasis as perceived in Ayurvedic textbooks.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Concept of cell:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the textbooks of Ayurveda were written about 2000 years ago, explanations based on the microscopic appearance of tissue or cells would not be available. But certain explanations hint at the conceptual level of understanding of the human body, especially the living units of the human body. In Ayurveda, certain terms have been used to indicate the minute living unit that makes up the entire body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0936\u0930\u0940\u0930\u093e\u0935\u092f\u0935\u093e\u0938\u094d\u0924\u0941 \u092a\u0930\u092e\u093e\u0923\u0941\u092d\u0947\u0926\u0947\u0928\u093e\u092a\u0930\u093f\u0938\u0919\u094d\u0916\u094d\u092f\u0947\u092f\u093e \u092d\u0935\u0928\u094d\u0924\u093f, \u0905\u0924\u093f\u092c\u0939\u0941\u0924\u094d\u0935\u093e\u0926\u0924\u093f\u0938\u094c\u0915\u094d\u0937\u094d\u092e\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0926\u0924\u0940\u0928\u094d\u0926\u094d\u0930\u093f\u092f\u0924\u094d\u0935\u093e\u091a\u094d\u091a| (Ch.Sha. 7\/17)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0As mentioned by Charak, the body parts if further divided at the micro-level (<em>Parmanu<\/em>) are innumerable because of abundance (<em>Atibahuta<\/em>), highly subtleness (<em>Atisukshma<\/em>), and imperceptibility (<em>Atindriya<\/em>). (Ch. Sha. 7\/17).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0905\u092a\u093f \u091a\u0948\u0915\u0947 \u0938\u094d\u0930\u094b\u0924\u0938\u093e\u092e\u0947\u0935 \u0938\u092e\u0941\u0926\u092f\u0902 \u092a\u0941\u0930\u0941\u0937\u092e\u093f\u091a\u094d\u091b\u0928\u094d\u0924\u093f, \u0938\u0930\u094d\u0935\u0917\u0924\u0924\u094d\u0935\u093e\u0924\u094d \u0938\u0930\u094d\u0935\u0938\u0930\u0924\u094d\u0935\u093e\u091a\u094d\u091a \u0926\u094b\u0937\u092a\u094d\u0930\u0915\u094b\u092a\u0923\u092a\u094d\u0930\u0936\u092e\u0928\u093e\u0928\u093e\u092e\u094d Ch. Vi 5\/4).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Charak quotes some scholars where it has been proposed that the entire human body is nothing but an aggregation of S<em>rotamsi <\/em>only<em>.\u00a0 <\/em>All the factors which aggravate or suppress the <em>Dosha <\/em>can move and spread all over the body through<em> Srotas<\/em>. Hence <em>Srotamsi<\/em> are fundamental units of the body. (Ch. Vi 5\/4). Thus the structural and functional importance of minute structures like <em>Sharir Parmanu <\/em>and <em>Srotas<\/em> has been explained in the Ayurveda texts.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Cell physiology:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u0938\u094d\u0930\u094b\u0924\u093e\u0902\u0938\u093f \u0916\u0932\u0941 \u092a\u0930\u093f\u0923\u093e\u092e\u092e\u093e\u092a\u0926\u094d\u092f\u092e\u093e\u0928\u093e\u0928\u093e\u0902 \u0927\u093e\u0924\u0942\u0928\u093e\u092e\u092d\u093f\u0935\u093e\u0939\u0940\u0928\u093f \u092d\u0935\u0928\u094d\u0924\u094d\u092f\u092f\u0928\u093e\u0930\u094d\u0925\u0947\u0928|| (Ch. Vi 5\/3).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Srotamsi<\/em> are nothing but the channels or pathways carrying <em>Dhatus<\/em> which are undergoing the process of transformation. Therefore all those pathways where some kind of transformation takes place can be termed as <em>Srotamsi.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0938\u094d\u0935\u0927\u093e\u0924\u0941\u0938\u092e\u0935\u0930\u094d\u0923\u093e\u0928\u093f \u0935\u0943\u0924\u094d\u0924\u0938\u094d\u0925\u0942\u0932\u093e\u0928\u094d\u092f\u0923\u0942\u0928\u093f \u091a| \u0938\u094d\u0930\u094b\u0924\u093e\u0902\u0938\u093f \u0926\u0940\u0930\u094d\u0918\u093e\u0923\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0915\u0943\u0924\u094d\u092f\u093e \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0924\u093e\u0928\u0938\u0926\u0943\u0936\u093e\u0928\u093f \u091a||(Ch.vi.5\/25).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Each <em>dhatu<\/em> has its corresponding <em>Srotas<\/em>. The appearance of <em>Srotas<\/em> is similar to its corresponding <em>Dhatu<\/em>. Some of them could be circular (Vritta), gross or microscopic (<em>Sthula<\/em> or <em>Anu<\/em>), elongated, and reticulate (<em>Pratan<\/em>) appearance. (Ch.vi.5\/25).These are possible structures in the body, especially the structures that are equivalent to tissues in the body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0This entire explanation is indicative of the two inferences. First inference suggests that individual <em>Dhatu <\/em>is structurally related to its corresponding <em>Srotas<\/em> while the second inference suggests that individual <em>Dhatu<\/em> is functionally related to its individual <em>Srotas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The word \u2018\u092a\u0930\u093f\u0923\u093e\u092e\u092e\u093e\u092a\u0926\u094d\u092f\u092e\u093e\u0928\u093e\u0928\u093e\u0902\u2019\u2019 means undergoing the process of transformation. This represents the metabolic relationship between individual <em>Dhatu<\/em> and corresponding <em>Srotas<\/em>.In summary, <em>Dhatus<\/em> are structurally and metabolically related with their corresponding <em>Srotas<\/em>. In terms of modern biomedicine, tissues are nothing but an aggregation of structurally and functionally similar cells. So this concept can be identified in these two references (Ch. Vi 5\/3, Ch.Vi.5\/25)from the Charak Samhita.\\<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Basic tissues:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Ayurveda understanding of tissue is not based upon histological observations. The perspective of Ayurveda to understand the human body is different than that of modern biomedicine. Each tissue was identified and described from different perspective.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0930\u0938\u093e\u0926\u094d\u0930\u0915\u094d\u0924\u0902 \u0924\u0924\u094b \u092e\u093e\u0902\u0938\u0902 \u092e\u093e\u0902\u0938\u093e\u0928\u094d\u092e\u0947\u0926\u0938\u094d\u0924\u0924\u094b\u093d\u0938\u094d\u0925\u093f \u091a| \u0905\u0938\u094d\u0925\u094d\u0928\u094b \u092e\u091c\u094d\u091c\u093e \u0924\u0924\u0903 \u0936\u0941\u0915\u094d\u0930\u0902 \u0936\u0941\u0915\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0926\u094d\u0917\u0930\u094d\u092d\u0903 \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0938\u093e\u0926\u091c\u0903||(Ch. Chi 15\/16)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are seven Dhatus that have been described. In Ayurveda, the fundamental structural entities described are <em>Dhatus<\/em> and Updhatues. The dhatus are \u00a0<em>Ras, Rakta, Mamsa, Meda, Asthi, Majja, <\/em>and finally the<em> Shukra <\/em>from which<em> Garbha <\/em>is formed. (Ch. Chi 15\/17)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Updhatus are derived after their primary dhatus. <em>Stanya<\/em>\u00a0(breast milk) and the <em>Asruja<\/em> (menstrual blood) are derived after <em>Rasa. Asruja<\/em> has a different meaning according to context, sometimes it means ovum and sometimes it means menstrual blood.<em> \u00a0Kandara<\/em>\u00a0(tendon) and\u00a0<em>Sira<\/em>(vein) are derived after\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carakasamhitaonline.com\/index.php?title=Rakta\">Rakta<\/a>.\u00a0Vasa<\/em> (muscle fat) and the six layers of\u00a0<em>Tvacha\u00a0<\/em>(skin) are derived after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carakasamhitaonline.com\/index.php?title=Mamsa\"><em>Mamsa<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(muscle) and\u00a0<em>Snayu<\/em>(ligament) are derived after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carakasamhitaonline.com\/index.php?title=Medas\"><em>Medas<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(adipose tissue)(Ch.chi15\/17).<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Primary understanding related to the concept of Dhatus<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Ras:<\/em><\/strong> It fundamentally indicates all the flowing colourless fluids containing nutrient material that may include plasma, interstitial fluid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Rakta<\/em><\/strong><em>: <\/em>It mainly stands for a red color fraction in the human body which is responsible for oxygenation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0<em>Mamsa<\/em><\/strong>: It is equivalent to the flesh while the term <em>Mamsa Peshi<\/em> is equivalent to muscle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0<em>Meda<\/em><\/strong>: It stands for the adipose tissue along with circulating lipids. As there are two types of <em>Meda<\/em> namely <em>Baddha<\/em> and <em>Abaddha<\/em> <em>Meda<\/em>. <em>Baddha<\/em> <em>meda<\/em> indicates stored fat while <em>Abaddha meda<\/em> indicates circulating lipids.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Asthi<\/em><\/strong>: It mainly stands for bones along with all the hard structures that resist easy decomposition. As per Ayurveda, hard structures like nails and teeth are considered under the category of <em>Asthi. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Majja: <\/strong>It stands for the substance that fills the bony cavity. This bony cavity may be present within a single bone e.g. the presence of bone marrow inside the bone. This bony cavity may be formed by the union of several bones eg. the cranial cavity that is filled by brain tissue. Therefore brain substance present within the skull can be considered as <em>Majja<\/em>. <em>Majja<\/em> is not equivalent to bone marrow, all bone marrow is <em>Majja<\/em> but all <em>Majja<\/em> is not bone marrow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Shukra:<\/strong> There are two types of <em>Shukra<\/em>, one circulates in the body.\u00a0 This <em>Shukra <\/em>that is derived from <em>Majja<\/em>, possibly represents hypothalmo pituitary-gonadal axis that is circulating all over the body. The other one <em>Shukra<\/em> possibly includes male reproductive factors, semen, and sometimes sperm.
