Su 12\/10, 11, 12)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The division of food into \u2018<em>Sara\u2019 <\/em>and \u2018<em>Kitta\u2019<\/em>and the major portion of digestion occurs in the small intestine<em>.<\/em>\u00a0 \u2018<em>Sara\u2019 <\/em>is the nutritive portions that get absorbed and the non-absorbable part i.e<em> Kitta <\/em>gets excreted. This happened with help of \u2018<em>Pachak Pitta\u2019. <\/em>Though made up of five basic elements, it is dominant in the fire principle, so it is devoid of fluidity and is called \u2018<em>Jatharagni<\/em>\u2019. The classification is enumerated such as the one based on the <em>Panchabhautika<\/em> composition, another one is of four types based on the physical property of foodstuff. The third type of classification is based upon the prominent <em>Rasa<\/em> out of six tastes to which one or two Rasa could dominate. The fourth classification is based upon <em>Veerya <\/em>i.e <em>Sheet Veerya<\/em> and <em>Ushna Veerya.<\/em> Another classification is based on <em>Ashtavidha Veerya<\/em>, it could be further divided into eight subtypes. Based on the twenty types of <em>Gunas<\/em>(attributes)<em>,<\/em> food can be further classified into several categories. Such type of food when get completely digested by the action of <em>Agni<\/em>, the resultant product formed is called <em>Sara<\/em> which is minute in nature. This minute portion formed after complete digestion of food is called \u2018<em>Rasa\u2019<\/em>. This minute portion named \u2018Rasa\u2019 after reaching the <em>Hriday<\/em> nourishes all other parts of the body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">How the <em>Rasa <\/em>does reaches to <em>Hriday<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0930\u0938\u0938\u094d\u0924\u0941 \u0939\u0943\u0926\u092f\u0902 \u092f\u093e\u0924\u093f \u0938\u092e\u093e\u0928 \u092e\u0930\u0941\u0924\u0947\u0930\u093f\u0924\u0903|(<em>Sharangdhar Purva Khand<\/em> 6\/8)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Samana Vata <\/em>governs the re-entry of \u2018<em>Rasa<\/em> \u2018into the heart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0924\u0947\u091c\u094b\u092d\u0942\u0924\u00a0 \u092a\u0930\u0902 \u0938\u0942\u0915\u094d\u0937\u094d\u092e\u0903 \u0938 \u0930\u0915\u094d\u0924\u0930\u0938 \u0909\u091a\u094d\u092f\u0924\u0947 |(<em>Atank Darpan<\/em> on <em>Madhav Nidan<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Sushruta <\/em>simply mentioned that the minute product formed after the action of <em>Agni<\/em> is the only \u2018<em>Rasa\u2019<\/em>. While in the verse mentioned in <em>Atank Darpan <\/em>further clarifies that the product generated after the action of <em>Agni <\/em>contains<em> Rasa <\/em>as well as<em> Rakta <\/em>because both of them circulate together inside the body. The above explanations clarify that blood reaches the heart from the periphery and from there onwards it gets pumped to other parts of the body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Cardiovascular system:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0930\u0938\u0935\u0939\u093e\u0928\u093e\u0902 \u0938\u094d\u0930\u094b\u0924\u0938\u093e\u0902 \u0939\u0943\u0926\u092f\u0902 \u092e\u0942\u0932\u0902 \u0926\u0936 \u091a \u0927\u092e\u0928\u094d\u092f\u0903|( Ch. Vi.5\/7)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The root of <em>Rasavah Srotas<\/em> consists of a heart and ten great blood vessels attached to it<em>. <\/em>These ten great vessels may include great veins and big arteries that originate from the heart. Number ten should not be taken in a literal sense rather it should be understood as few blood vessels carry <em>Rasa<\/em> towards the periphery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is Rasa?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0930\u0938\u0930\u0942\u092a\u094b \u0927\u093e\u0924\u0941\u0903, \u0915\u093f\u0902\u0935\u093e \u0930\u0938\u0924\u0940\u0924\u093f \u0930\u0938\u094b \u0926\u094d\u0930\u0935\u0927\u093e\u0924\u0941\u0930\u0941\u091a\u094d\u092f\u0924\u0947, \u0924\u0947\u0928 \u0930\u0941\u0927\u093f\u0930\u093e\u0926\u0940\u0928\u093e\u092e\u092a\u093f \u0926\u094d\u0930\u0935\u093e\u0923\u093e\u0902 \u0917\u094d\u0930\u0939\u0923\u0902 \u092d\u0935\u0924\u093f| Chakrapani\u00a0 on Ch.Chi 15\/36<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All the fluids that flow in the body can be termed as <em>Rasa Dhatu<\/em>. Whatever fluid present in the body can be termed as <em>Rasa Dhatu<\/em> provided that it circulates. Whenever the fluid flows into the body it comes under the term <em>Rasa Dhatu.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Autonomic control of Heart:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">How does this <em>Rasa<\/em> get pumped into peripheral parts of body?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0935\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0928\u0947\u0928 \u0930\u0938\u0927\u093e\u0924\u0941\u0930\u094d\u0939\u093f \u0935\u093f\u0915\u094d\u0937\u0947\u092a\u094b\u091a\u093f\u0924\u0915\u0930\u094d\u092e\u0923\u093e|<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u092f\u0941\u0917\u092a\u0924\u094d \u0938\u0930\u094d\u0935\u0924\u094b\u093d\u091c\u0938\u094d\u0930\u0902 \u0926\u0947\u0939\u0947 \u0935\u093f\u0915\u094d\u0937\u093f\u092a\u094d\u092f\u0924\u0947 \u0938\u0926\u093e|(Ch. Chi 15\/36)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The above verse explains that <em>Vyan Vata<\/em> is situated in the <em>Hriday <\/em>(heart) and it causes the propulsion of <em>Rasa Dhatu<\/em> from the <em>Hriday<\/em>. Today we know that the heart muscle has its intrinsic capacity to generate impulses and that is how the pumping is made possible. This intrinsic function of the heart is under the influence of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The entire autonomic nervous system controls the heart and the intrinsic ability of the heart to generate its impulses and to beat continuously. So all such controlling mechanisms can be included under the functions of <em>Vyan Vata<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The continuous function of heart and the continuous flow of blood in the body could be interpreted by knowing certain adjectives that have been mentioned in the second line of the above <em>shloka.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meaning of adjectives used in the verse:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u092f\u0941\u0917\u092a\u0924\u094d- <em>Rasa<\/em> flows occurs simultaneously, \u0938\u0930\u094d\u0935\u0924\u094b &#8211; in the entire body,\u0905\u091c\u0938\u094d\u0930\u0902-everywhere in the body, \u0938\u0926\u093e-continuously, \u0935\u093f\u0915\u094d\u0937\u093f\u092a\u094d\u092f\u0924\u0947- forcefully<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By the action of <em>Vyan Vata <\/em>flow of <em>Rasa<\/em> occurs simultaneously in the entire body, everywhere in the body continuously and forcefully. So one needs to understand that the physiology of circulation has been explained under <em>Rasavah Srotas<\/em> and not the <em>Raktvah Srotas. <\/em>Because <em>Raktavah Srotas<\/em> is mostly indicative of the \u2018Hemopoietic System\u2019, not the circulatory System\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0915\u0943\u0924\u094d\u0938\u094d\u0928\u0926\u0947\u0939\u091a\u0930\u094b \u0935\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0928\u094b \u0930\u0938\u0938\u0902\u0935\u0939\u0928\u094b\u0926\u094d\u092f\u0924\u0903|(Su. Ni 1\/17)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Vyan Vata<\/em> moves through the entire body. The major function of <em>Vyan Vata<\/em> is to cause the movement of <em>Rasa<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0935\u093f\u0923\u094d\u092e\u0942\u0924\u094d\u0930\u0902 \u0906\u0939\u093e\u0930\u092e\u0932\u0903 \u0938\u093e\u0930\u0903 \u092a\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0917\u0940\u0930\u093f\u0924\u094b \u0930\u0938\u0903|\u0938 \u0924\u0941 \u0935\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0928\u0947\u0928 \u0935\u093f\u0915\u094d\u0937\u093f\u092a\u094d\u0924\u0903 \u0938\u0930\u094d\u0935\u093e\u0928\u094d \u0927\u093e\u0924\u0942\u0928\u094d \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0924\u0930\u094d\u092a\u092f\u0947\u0924| Su.Su 46\/526<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Vita<\/em>, <em>Mutra,<\/em> and <em>Malarupi Vayu <\/em>are three important waste products of <em>Ahar. Saar <\/em>is nothing but the <em>Rasa<\/em> that has been explained earlier. This understanding becomes important to understand the physiology of cardiovascular system and its relationship with digestion. Only the absorbable portion gets absorbed from the gut and it becomes the <em>Rasa Dhatu. <\/em>This <em>Rasa<\/em> enters the <em>Hriday <\/em>and then gets carried all over the body. Forceful expulsion of this <em>Rasa <\/em>because of the activity of <em>Vyan. <\/em>This <em>Rasa <\/em>afterward nourishes all the other <em>Dhatus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u2018Circulation\u2019 in General<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0938\u0928\u094d\u0924\u0924\u094d\u092f\u093e \u092d\u094b\u091c\u094d\u092f\u0927\u093e\u0924\u0942\u0928\u093e\u0902 \u092a\u0930\u093f\u0935\u0943\u0924\u094d\u0924\u093f\u0938\u094d\u0924\u0941 \u091a\u0915\u094d\u0930\u0935\u0924\u094d|Ch. Chi 15\/21)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The analogy of a rotating wheel called \u2018<em>Chakra\u2019<\/em> has been used to describe circulation<em>. <\/em>The nourishment of all the <em>Dhatus<\/em> takes place in a manner that is similar to a rotating wheel. The term circulation originates from a circle or circular movement which means something starts from some point and it returns to the same point after completing the circuit. Similarly, the analogy of Chakra captures the idea of circulation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>CVS: A complete circuit:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0939\u0943\u0926\u094b \u0930\u0938\u094b \u0928\u093f\u0903\u0938\u0930\u0924\u093f \u0924\u0938\u094d\u092e\u093e\u0926\u0947\u0935 \u091a \u0938\u0930\u094d\u0935\u0936\u0903|<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0938\u093f\u0930\u093e\u092d\u093f\u0930\u094d\u0939\u0943\u0926\u092f \u091a\u0948\u0924\u093f \u0924\u0938\u094d\u092e\u093e\u0924\u094d \u0939\u0943\u0924\u094d\u092a\u094d\u0930\u092d\u0935\u0903 \u0938\u093f\u0930\u093e|| Bhel. Su 21<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This reference from <em>Bhel Samhita<\/em> is very important because this is possibly one reference that explains the basics of the systemic circulation. It is said that this <em>Rasa Dhatu is <\/em>ejected out of <em>Hridaya<\/em> and from there onwards it moves all over the body. It once again reaches the <em>Hridaya <\/em>through the blood vessels known as <em>Siras<\/em>. Therefore <em>Sira<\/em> can be originated from Heart. This entire circulatory system is a closed circuit. It originates in the heart and ends up in the heart. Sh.3\/18,19<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ten major blood vessels that are attached to the <em>Hriday <\/em>run in the entire body. It carries the <em>Oja <\/em>which is circulating along with <em>Rasa. <\/em>It means that <em>Ojas <\/em>also circulates along with<em> Rasa. <\/em>In the previous references, it has been mentioned that <em>Rakta <\/em>also circulates along with <em>Rasa<\/em>. \u00a0Therefore three important fractions that run in the cardiovascular system are <em>Rasa, Rakta,<\/em> and <em>Ojas. <\/em>Life is sustained because of <em>Ojas <\/em>that circulate along with <em>Rasa<\/em>. The site of origin of these blood vessels is comparatively gross, while tracing it towards the periphery they become minute and narrower. This appearance is like the reticular venation seen on the leaves. \u00a0This is how these vessels divide and re-divide to become narrower. There are around 700 important blood vessels. The number 700 need not be important. It should not be taken in the literal sense. But it only indicates that there is a huge number of blood vessels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Auto rhythmicity of Heart<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u0926\u0947\u0939\u093f\u0928\u093e\u0902 \u0939\u0943\u0926\u092f\u0902 \u0926\u0947\u0939\u0902 \u0938\u0941\u0916\u0926\u0941\u0916\u0903\u092a\u094d\u0930\u0915\u093e\u0936\u0915\u092e|\u0924\u0924\u094d \u00a0\u0938\u0919\u094d\u0915\u094b\u091a \u0935\u093f\u0915\u093e\u0938\u091e\u091a \u0938\u094d\u0935\u0924\u0903 \u0915\u0941\u0930\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0924\u094d \u092a\u0941\u0928\u0903 \u092a\u0941\u0928\u0903|| Nadivigyan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In human beings, <em>Hriday <\/em>is a good reflector of wellbeing and ill health of the body. Wind velocity is less than the sound velocity. Water moves with minimum velocity among the three. Surprisingly the blood moves in the body in this way also. From the Aorta the velocity of blood can be observed that the mean flow velocity goes on getting reduced. In the big arteries, it is maximum. In smaller arteries and arterioles it is moderate and in the capillaries it is minimal. Here water from the water reservoir is carried through the canal to irrigate the different fields. Similarly, <em>Rasa<\/em> also acts as a nutrient pool, and other <em>Dhatus <\/em>derive their nutrition only through this pool. First, <em>Rasa<\/em> nourishes <em>Rakta<\/em> and it becomes like <em>Rakta. <\/em>Then it moves on to other <em>Dhatu<\/em>. Thus <em>Rasa <\/em>itself nourishes all other <em>Dhatus<\/em>.<em> Rasa <\/em>represents a common nutrient pool from which all other <em>Dhatus<\/em> derive their nutrition. So, the distance covered by them from their nests to the heaps of grain determines the nourishment of different pigeons and how fast they get nourishment. Likewise, tissues also get nutrients in the same way, based on the distance from the nutrient pool to the different tissues. So this is applicable in some instances of physiology. In the liver, the central vein is the vein that ultimately drains to become the hepatic vein. The branch of the hepatic artery branch and branch of the portal vein drains the blood into the sinusoids of the liver. The peripheral part of the lobule receives oxygen-rich blood because there is a mixture of arterial and venous blood. The peripheral parts of the lobule receive nutrient and oxygen-rich blood. While the blood reaches the central vein, the hepatocytes surrounding the central vein portion receive oxygen-poor blood.
