REGIMEN FOR II AND III TRIMESTERS OF PREGNANCY AS PER AYURVEDIC CLASSICS

 

Forth month

  • चतुर्थेमासे क्षीरनवनीतमक्षमात्रमश्नीयात् II Cha.Sha.8/32II

Butter with milk or butter from milk in dose of 24 gm

  • चतुर्थेदध्नाSha. 10/4 II

Cooked shali rice with curd

  • Food mixed with butter and milk
  • Seasoned rice Kritaudanam

Fifth month

  • पञ्चमेमासे क्षीरसर्पिःII Cha. Sha.8/32 II
  • पञ्चमेपयसाSha.10/4II
  • Ghee and milk, cooked Rice with milk
  • Rice cooked in milk (Ksheera Yavagu)
  • Sweets made of rice and milk (Payasa)
  • Rice with Jangala Mamsa Rasa (Meat soup of terrestrial animals) like goat’s meat
  • Ghee prepared from milk
  • Yavagu- A semisolid rice preparation made from milk

Sixth month

  • मासेक्षीरसर्पिर्मधुरौषधसिद्धं; तदेव सप्तमे मासेSha.8/32

Milk and ghee prepared in Madhura Gana Aushadhi is advocated by Acharya Charaka during 6th month.

  • Medicated milk and ghee (Madhuraushadhi siddha Ksheera sarpi)

Seventh month

  • Ghee medicated with Vidarigandhadi Gana (Shvadanstra- Tribulus terrestris), Prithakparni (Ureria Picta), Shatavari (Asparagus recemosa), Sariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Brihati (Solanum Indicum), Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), Punarnava (Borrhevia Diffusa)

Eighth month

  • अष्टमेतु मासे क्षीरयवागूं सर्पिष्मतीं काले काले पिबेत् II Cha. Sha.8/32 II

Rice gruel with milk and ghee (Charaka)

  • पैङ्गल्याबाधोह्यस्या गर्भमागच्छेदिति; अस्त्वत्र पैङ्गल्याबाध इत्याह भगवान् पुनर्वसुरात्रेयः, न त्वेवैतन्न कार्यम्; एवं कुर्वती ह्यरोगाऽऽरोग्यबलवर्णस्वरसंहननसम्पदुपेतं ज्ञातीनामपि श्रेष्ठमपत्यं जनयति Sha.8/32 II
  • Liquid diet prepared with ghee, and milk
  • Rice gruel
  • अष्टमे बदरोदकेन बलातिबलाशतपुष्पापललपयोदधिमस्तु तैललवणमदनफलमधुघृत मिश्रेणास्थापयेत्पुराणपुरीषशुद्ध्यर्थमनुलोमनार्थं च वायोः- Expulsion of retained faeces and pacification of Vayu by administration of Asthapana Basti with decoction prepared from Badara (Zizpus Jujuba), Bala (Sida cardifolia), Atibala (Abitulon indica), Shatapushpa (Funiculum vulgare), palala (paste of sesame), milk and supernatent part of curd along with oil, rock salt, Madana phala (Randia spinosa), honey, ghee
  • ततःपयोमधुरकषायसिद्धेन  तैलेनानुवासयेत्, अनुलोमे हि वायौ सुखं प्रसूयते निरुपद्रवा च भवति- Anuvasana Basti with oil prepared from decoction of Madhura gana dravyas and milk.
  • Generally about 30 ml medicated ghee/oil is administered through anal route in Anuvasana Basti.
  • अतऊर्ध्वं स्निग्धाभिर्यवागूभिर्जाङ्गलरसैश्चोपक्रमेदाप्रसवकालात्; एवमुपक्रान्ता स्निग्धा बलवती सुखमनुपद्रवा प्रसूयते- This is followed by administration of unctuous gruel (Yavagu) with meat soup. The regimen pacifies and directs the Vata in proper direction resulting in proper nourishment and easy delivery.

Ninth month

  • नवमेतु खल्वेनां मासे मधुरौषधसिद्धेन तैलेनानुवासयेत्|
    अतश्चैवास्यास्तैलात् पिचुं योनौ प्रणयेद्गर्भस्थानमार्गस्नेहनार्थम् Sha.8/32II Anuvasana Basti with Medicines having above mentioned drugs or medicated oil like Ksheera bala oil
  • Vaginal tampoon (cotton soaked in the above said oil can be kept in vagina)
  • Rice, and ghee, rice gruel with unctuous substances, meat soup
  • Terrestrial meat soup for non-vegetarians
  • Even though Ayurveda emphasises on the vegetarian diet, for the persons who are completely dependent on nonvegetarian from their child hood Meat of terrestrial animals like Chicken and goat meat can be had in the form of soups

Practically Milk can be advocated with different adjuvants according to condition during entire pregnancy

  • Milk with dry fruits- for strength promotion
  • Milk with ginger/ginger/ turmeric in respiratory problems/allergic disorders
  • Ashwagandha with milk for bone health
